Press Release: LINN IS DELIGHTED TO LAUNCH A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH KEBYART, ECHO RISING STARS FOR 2021/22

The young, energetic Spanish ensemble, comprising four talented saxophonists, presents ‘Lectures différentes’. For its debut recording the group has unabashedly arranged works from the standard repertoire, creating new and refreshing accounts.

The album will be recorded in October and November 2021 in Spain, and released on 22 April 2022 to accompany the ensemble’s tour across the most prestigious venues in Europe as part of the ECHO Rising Stars scheme.

Kebyart says:

Kebyart is very excited to join forces with Linn Records, a label which is synonymous with excellence. We share Linn’s passion for high quality sound and musical eclecticism. We are also proud to be part of the Outhere Music family, alongside other artists whom we have always greatly admired.

The concept of ‘Lectures différentes’ is taken from the saxophone quartet by Peter Eötvös, and it is somehow present throughout our album: from Pulcinella, which is Stravinsky’s personal take of eighteenth-century music, to well-known Spanish poet Federico García Lorca’s harmonizations of some Spanish folk songs – presented here in a fresh version by young Majorcan composer Joan Pérez-Villegas.

To break the limits of saxophone, we love to go beyond the origin of the instrument (mid- nineteenth century) and to propose new ways of looking at certain works from the past. That’s the aim of our transcription of Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 33 No. 3, also included here.

To conclude the album, we propose two little surprise tracks ...

Pere Méndez soprano saxophone

Víctor Serra alto saxophone

Robert Seara tenor saxophone

Daniel Miguel baritone saxophone

Hailing from Barcelona, Kebyart is one of the most promising ensembles on the current music scene. These four talented musicians share an endless passion for chamber music and wish to breathe fresh air into the way classical music is communicated. Their endeavour to transform their performances into a unique experience results in explosive and vibrant staging, which has been praised by audiences and critics alike. The trademark signature of Kebyart is a creative and open approach to the repertoire.

Their glittering career has sparked the interest of the major concert halls in Europe and consequently they have been selected as ECHO Rising Stars for the 2021-22 season. As part of the scheme, they will make their debut in more than a dozen venues and festivals such as Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Musikverein in Vienna, Philharmonie in Paris and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. They have also performed in London’s Wigmore Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, Stadtcasino Basel, Schubertíada Vilabertran and Palau de la Música Catalana.

Their interpretations have secured them some of the most recognized European chamber music awards: the Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music Competition, the International Franz Cibulka Competition, El Primer Palau and the prestigious BBVA Chamber Music Prize. Since 2018 they have been part of the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA).

Since its beginning in 2014, Kebyart has striven for excellence. The musicians studied at ESMUC (Barcelona) and Musik-Akademie (Basel), and received tuition from some of the most renowned musicians and chamber groups including Cuarteto Casals, Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartett), Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartett), Cuarteto Quiroga, bassoon player Sergio Azzolini, pianists Claudio Martínez-Mehner, Anton Kernjak and Kennedy Moretti, and saxophonist Nacho Gascón. They have also collaborated with outstanding artists such as Dénes Várjon, Xavier Sabata and Albert Guinovart.

And where does the name come from? Explosive contrasts of tempo, dynamics and colours. These are the qualities of gamelan gong kebyar, a traditional Balinese music which accompanies dance and aims at causing ecstasy among the audiences, a goal shared by the four saxophonists. As ambassadors of the brands, they perform on Henri Selmer saxophones and Vandoren accessories.
